Today is Global Recycling Day! If you’re new to the commemoration, it is March 18 each year. The theme for Global Recycling Day is #RecyclingHeroes. Think about it … what does being a recycling hero mean to you?
For us here at RPJ, it means finding your WHY to recycle and actually doing it.
According to a 2023 study we did on recycling habits, we found that 65% of Jamaicans recycle because they want to protect Jamaica’s environment from improper waste disposal. 41% of Jamaicans recycle to reduce their waste at home and 35% recycle because they want to do the right thing. Their hero habits include separating at home and using one of our many drop off locations to place their plastic bottles.
There is another reason why people recycle. To earn money! 6% of the population say they recycle so they can earn money from the return of plastic bottles. You can earn money from recycling through the Deposit Return Scheme, DRS, on plastic bottles, which is currently $50 per kilogram. To earn this money, you have to register by sending us an email to info@recyclingja.com and say you want to sign up for the DRS. We’ll send you a registration form that you will fill out with your basic information and send us the signed form as a picture or scan along with a copy of your ID and TRN. Our Vendor Services Team will send you a Vendor ID number, which completes your registration.
HOW DO I GET PAID THROUGH THE DRS?
STEP 1: Collect 68 kilograms (150 pounds) of plastic bottles. Make sure the bottles are empty and store them separately from other types of waste.
