Recycling Partners collected six million (6,000,000) pounds of plastics for recycling between January and December 2022. This is approximately one hundred and twenty five million (125,000,000) plastic bottles.
In a video posted to its YouTube page, the company says this represents approximately 16% of the bottles used in Jamaica annually. The massive figure of 125 million plastics recycled, equates to over seventy (70) million Jamaican dollars paid for the return of plastics through the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS).
Speaking in the almost 3-minute-long video, Chairman of Recycling Partners of Jamaica, Dr. Damien King, applauded the country in its efforts to recycle, noting that according to the company’s recent survey, one third of the citizens of the country regularly recycle.
Noting the company faced many challenges, chief among which was collection of the plastics, Dr. King promises that the company will do better in 2023.
“We’re getting in new equipment and by the end of the year, we should have three times the processing capacity we now have. We’re expanding our fleet, we’re expanding our staff. So, as you continue to recycle, we’re going to continue to improve our ability to solve this plastic problem,” Dr. King says.
